The
Americas Project

The "Americas
Project" is a joint undertaking of the Organization of
American States (OAS) and the Baker Institute at Rice University,
which recognizes the best and the brightest in leadership in
the countries of the hemisphere, in a wide variety of fields,
including political, economic and cultural. The two co-sponsors
of this Project consider it one of the most important international
initiatives undertaken in recent years. The main objectives
of the "Americas Project" are to promote better understanding
among the young leaders of the Americas, to increase and foster
the exchange of ideas and information among these individuals
and to provide the basis for a viable network among them. The
individuals selected to participate in this project must be
from an OAS member state between the ages of 25 to 40 and must
demonstrate significant achievements in their careers, leadership
qualities, and ability to have an impact on society. The OAS
provides the air travel of the participants while the Baker
Institute of Rice University is responsible for providing all
personnel, services, activities, facilities, and materials for
the young leaders.

The 2006 Americas
Project Colloquium took place at the Organization of
American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. The Americas Project,
now in its 11th year, is a collaborative venture uniting the
resources and expertise of the James A. Baker III Institute
for Public Policy and the OAS. This undertaking is designed
to create an annual leadership forum where approximately 15
of the hemisphere’s brightest and most promising young
leaders can engage in dialogue on important topics of hemispheric
consequences during a four-day period. As part of the program,
they attend the panel of experts. The panel met on
the afternoon of Friday, May 19, 2006 at the OAS Headquarters.
The theme of the 2006 Americas Project colloquium was “Freedom
of Expression in the Americas in the 21st Century". The
last two decades have marked a truly historical movement towards
democracy throughout Latin America. The task before the continent
today is to consolidate and deepen all elements of democratic
governance, and freedom of expression is a crucial aspect in
this process. Among the topics for discussion during last year’s
colloquium were media ownership, financing and accountability,
transparency and access to information, and legal and regulatory
frameworks.
